Why Balance is Important in Games

May 25, 2018

About a week ago I purchased Slay the Spire from developers Mega Crit Games. In that week, I’ve already put in about 30 hours and I just can’t get enough. It’s a deck-building roguelike that has you making your way through several levels of a dungeon, slaying monsters, at the request of a giant whale monster. There are a lot of games in the roguelike genre at the moment, but Slay the Spire stands out among them for me for a simple reason: Balance. Risk vs. Reward Even though it’s still in early access, the game is excellently balanced. As you make your way through the spire, you collect cards to make your deck better, rest to heal, and come across the occasional mystery event. These events…

The Untapped Potential Of Superhero Games

May 3, 2018

Last week saw the release of Avengers: Infinity War and, not surprisingly, it has had an incredible reception at the box office. Marvel has been building up its cinematic universe methodically and been doing an excellent job at it. However, every time I see another Marvel movie release, a question pops into my mind: Why haven’t we seen the same level of quality product appear in video games? There are superhero games, of course, but the existing potential that exists is still largely untapped. Most of the releases we’ve seen aren’t even really superhero games. The series of Lego games, for example. Or Injustice. Or Marvel vs. Capcom. I could go on, but my point is simply that while many of these games are fun to…

God of War: Taking a Glance at Norse Mythology

April 18, 2018

Friday will finally see the highly anticipated return of God of War to PlayStation. It has been 5 years since the release of the last major installment in the series, God of War: Ascension, and it’s fair to say that the franchise’s first appearance on PlayStation 4 is making a very big splash. With just about a day left until official release, early reviews are through the roof and that shouldn’t be surprising. The God of War series has historically been one of the PlayStation’s defining franchises, and their arrival on PS4 brings with it a whole new mythological realm. Of course, there are also many other changes, and while I’ll cover some of the major ones quickly, the Internet is already saturated with discussions of combat…

The Death of Local Co-op

April 12, 2018

Local cooperative video games are slowly disappearing, but aren’t they worth saving? Last year we saw the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Nioh just to name a few. All in all, it was incredible and 2018 likely won’t disappoint either with releases like Monster Hunter: World and Ni no Kuni II. Not to mention that God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 are on the way. However, amidst all the excitement, it seems cooperative play has been left behind; at least, local co-op has been. In a way, it’s strange. Now that screens are bigger than ever, split-screen has become a far more viable option, but it’s rarely an option provided anymore. I…
